The friendship merger between Bio and Geo

Redactie VU Magazine8 February 2023

In 1998, two high school friends start their studies at VU Amsterdam. One is studying Earth Sciences, the other Medical Biology. Right from introduction week, they make new friends in both areas of study.

They go to each other's get-togethers, C2 parties, galas and on ski trips. There is joint bowling by the men, and squash by the women. Despite competing studies, the group of friends mingles and expands. Relationships are forming (and dying). Not just Bio-Bio or Geo-Geo, but even Geo-Bio.

After graduation, some stay at VU to obtain their PhD; others find jobs elsewhere. Weddings (and a divorce) follow, and children are born (and one buried). From Amsterdam, everyone spreads out across the rest of the country and the world. The shared ski trip, that stays.

Sanne: "It's 2023, our 25th anniversary. Squash is still being played. This year we are renting a house in the Ardennes to celebrate New Year's Eve together: the friends from back then, their partners and families. 60 people in total. Still a happy chaos. Thanks to VU!”
